Project Focus

Windmill Project is a family support program that helps parents who have children with any type of disability or special health need connect to other parents, information, and/or resources.

Components of Windmill Project

  • Provides support to families who have children with special needs, birth to 22
  • Parent Retreat conference - annually since 1990 - up to 200 parents attend each year - Parent’s fees are reduced by Windmill Project fundraising efforts
  • Parent Consultants - parents who have children with special needs are hired to facilitate parent to parent connections and family support on the local level
  • Parent Consultants work in partnership with local professional contacts
  • Project activities based on parent input into locally generated work plans
  • Networking between local interagency committees - increased parental involvement, public awareness and community linkages

Problems addressed by this program:

Families of any socioeconomic level, regardless of education, race, religion or ethnic background who have children (ages 0-22) with a disability may:

  • Feel a sense of isolation and helplessness
  • Lack information about available services for their children or their family
  • Not receive needed support (due to the lack of services or the inability of an existing service to meet families' individualized needs)

Mission Statement

Families and Professionals working together, sharing experiences, offering information
and encouragement to create quality support and generate energy within

This project is aptly named for several reasons:
  • Windmills generate energy using a naturally occurring force.   That’s true also when parents support other parents.
  • Windmills appear as a symbol of rurality; they stand alone.   Here in rural Minnesota, parents whose children have disabilities, do indeed feel isolated and alone.  In truth, though, when each one works alone, incredible tasks can be accomplished, like the Dutch windmills that reclaimed the land from the sea.
  • Windmills are one of the special and lovely things about Holland.  Parents networking together for mutual support, is one of the most meaningful parts of our lives as parents of children with disabilities.
